Here’s a sample for you:
1.
SANTUARIO DE CHIMAYÓ. Shard of mirror. Nest of thorn.
Luminous, blossoming bone.
If you stare long enough into this valley, you can see her—
your mother—
The crossing. The shadow.
Everything
closing in—
2.
OF ROADS TO FORGIVENESS. Of blue wooden doors.
Of cracked peeling white earthen walls. Of cobwebbed nails,
of braces and canes. Of hands threading dirt toward light.
You have come for this, too. You have come here again.
To deliver what your mother can no longer find.
So you drive through this village in circling dead
ends—feeling numb, off, blind. Bearing witness,
you know, is no longer enough. You must reach out
to release, not hold. One in a line of lost tourist-
pilgrims, both kin and guest, pouring yourself
through your fingers into a hole.
3.
HER GRANDFATHER SAYS FROM DEATH: Watch the bridge,
not the river. Yet bodies of sparrows in her yard. And along the
back fence she can feel it, your mother tells you.
In the cottonwoods, a claw-footed bell.
