AN IMPORTANT NOTE FROM MEAGER LIFE & PROPERTY Paul Arney [click image for larger version] |
__ "An Important Note From Meager Life & Property" was written as an assignment for an online writing course I took last year called The Forge. The instructors called it a 'Hermit Crab' assignment; we were to take an existing form of some sort and hijack it. As I was in the process of selling many of my possessions on Facebook Marketplace and Ebay, my disdain for the capitalist nature of things seeped in and I came up with this fictitious letter from a very dystopian insurance company. Ellen Santasiero, one of my instructors, loved it and thought I should submit it specifically to DIAGRAM. After learning about DIAGRAM's love of schematics, I asked my pal, Mordecai Polypony, to come up with some artwork that might accompany the piece. When he sent me the sketch of the abacus, it made sense to break up the letter into the free spaces in Mordecai's drawing. Breaking away from the form of the letter gave the piece a playfulness that was really important. While this playfulness makes the piece fun to read and contributes to the humor of it, it also points to the very dark reality of the facelessness we have as humans to our corporate overlords.
