"Eye of God" was initially composed as a durational experiment during the total solar eclipse in Fredericksburg, Texas, on April 8, 2024. I wrote from the beginning of the eclipse through totality. The poem also references the annular eclipse on October 14, 2023, and considers the way these two eclipses framed the ongoing genocide in Gaza for me at the time, when official reports estimated more than 35,000 Gazans had been killed. When you read this, that number will be crushingly higher. The poem also references Mission Concepción in San Antonio and the legacy of colonization there.
