This erasure is from my second work in progress manuscript, Stars Underwater. It begins with an open letter to a friend of mine who died of cancer in high school. The obsession and investigation of death brought Lucy Sante's book Evidence to my notice. Sante's book is "a collection of evidence photographs taken by the NYC police between 1914 and 1918 to express the social fabric of the times, texture of the lives depicted, and the progress of forensic use of photography." I was very fascinated by the remnants of the dead--how much does one hold on to? The erasure piece is merely a window of one aching possibility among the infinite.
