STEPHEN HAWKING & ROBOTIC DOLLS

Lisa Mottolo

Sometimes I think about those weird dolls
that ate plastic fries
like they wanted to be real babies
and would choke on fingers of children,
into the cold machinery of their heads
I would see the videos of Stephen Hawking
through his artificial voice
Saying, He wasn't talking about dolls
But I think normalizing these things
where we think,
and, Yeah, they can be attached
to help the disabled function,
and well obviously the military
we don't want them fighting

When lifelike skin was developed
and robotic bees were invented

there have been various points
whether we admitted it or not
I think we probably should have
when the dolls started eating plastic fries
and sucking children's hair

that came out in the 90's
and vegetable sticks
but couldn't manage it
would suck a child's hair
leading to injuries that ended up on the news
warning about artificial intelligence
And you may laugh,
with moving mouths,
is where the seed begins to sprout
sure, robots can pretend to eat, that's fine

to paralyzed body parts
it's only right
should be able to benefit from new technology,
with bows and arrows.

for sex dolls
to replace the ones we killed

where we felt a pinch of nausea
(and we probably didn't).
said something
and vegetable sticks
into the cold machinery of their heads.

I remember being freaked out as a kid by the news stories of robotic dolls eating hair and fingers. It felt unnecessary and strange to bring such technology into a toy. In my early to mid-twenties, I refused to get internet or a smartphone and clutched my copy of the Unabomber's Manifesto a bit too tightly. This piece sympathizes with my anxieties of the past, and the irony of it being published online does not escape me.
