FISH AVOIDANCE CONDITIONING TANK

D. Slotton, found in L. S. Otis and J. A. Cerf, "Conditioned Avoidance in Two Fish Species," Psychological Reports, June 1963

The experiment was conducted in semi-darkness. A 7.5-w bulb in a goose-neck lamp illuminated E's table. Each fish was given six preference trials after 5 min. adaptation in the tank (both lights off). Preference trials consisted of switching the light from one compartment to the other and measuring the length of time S stayed in either the lighted or darkened chamber. Only fish that spent 75% or more of the time in dark were used as Ss. Four fish (all goldfish) were disqualified by this criterion.
