HORROR AND THE HORRIFIC BODY
__ THE TRANSGRESSIVE BODY IN FILM
__ As an individual with a disability, I rarely see bodies like mine on screen, and when I do, those representations are rarely positive. Growing up, it was the pitiful, the monstrous, and the marginal I identified with, not the heroes. Movies are always trying to keep these bodies in their place, killing off, healing, or otherwise disposing of them before the credits, as though their very presence threatens disruption. In this series, I explore the often painful, sometimes liberating, function of these transgressive bodies in film. These essay-poems use a form that aims to be as transgressive as the bodies they discuss, with words overlapping, cutting off abruptly, and otherwise not staying in their place. |
