ONE BY TWO

Erin Steinke

1:2
the small girl:  her two brothers
she leads in the line:  they are older
they sample her and are older

1
2   (one over two)
she is not enough to go
around
summations
are further than
the vanishing pt
in her divided body
she is not yet—
in subject becoming object
in fragments:  the splintering

.5
the remainder = what is left
when they have finished,
when the pt of contact
has been worked through for
the moment
a singularity
comes from her mouth

1:2
her one self, the two boys
divided only
by the ratio,
that final entrance
when each carries a hammer
loose by his side.

                                                                                                                                for her

Writing "one by two" I was interested in two things. One was a violent childhood experience of a close friend. Second, how to use fractions and particularly the way fractions are represented through both speech and symbol as a system for structuring this moment.
