CORRECT IDENTIFICATION OF VCR CONTROL ICONS (% OF TOTAL SAMPLE)

Martin Maguire and Lindsey Butters, "Survey of the Recognition of Icons on Video Recorders," Contemporary Ergonomics 1995, Taylor & Francis

A survey was carried out, as part of the ESPRIT FACE 6994 project, on people's preferences for and usage of a range of electronic home devices. (Maguire et al, 1993). Part of this survey looked at people's ability to recognize tape deck icons commonly used on a video recorder front panel or remote control unit. The survey involved interviewing 100 people in each of four European countries (UK, France, Germany and Italy). Each responded was either an owner of user of a video recorder of four years old or less. A balance was struct between male and female users and across different age ranges. The particular question posed was as follows: "These are symbols sometimes used on the keys of TV and video recorder handsets. What action do you think each key would perform?"
