Matthew Kay

This piece is one of many poetic piecharts and other non-mathematical, un-scientific allusive diagrams that I have been creating alongside my sculptural practice since 2006. From their inception they have been an exercise in re-contextualising readymade text and exploring the new meanings created in the process. Thematically my diagram poems explore relationships – between people, internal conflicts within the self, between ideas, words or images. They often explore religious concepts. This particular poem is of the former, two people inexpertly negotiating their lot in life, type. I particularly enjoy the contrast between the cold, precise, clarity of diagrams and the ambiguous, emotive collections of words and phrases that bring them to life.

For further reading I would direct you towards some of the collaged essays on [my website], most of which are complimentary texts from volumes of diagram poetry.
