On a morning in January he found only seabirds
     the white sun hidden behind clouds
       while the white sun hidden behind clouds
            kept up its yellow burning

     though he was looking for starfish
       and the seabirds at the surface of the ocean
            were looking with purpose
on a morning in January
     she was dying
       with their seabird eyes
            with the blue green world below

     for something to devour
       the blue green world in yellow burning
            hidden behind white clouds
January
     with familiar progress growing colder
       with blue green progress growing colder
            the yellow world with hidden progress
morning in January
     and she was dying
       though he looked with purpose
            for starfish then
on a morning in January
     the blue world green with yellow progress
       at the surface of the ocean
            there is something to devour
on a morning in January he found seabirds
     how she would crouch beside him
       his hands stained brown and they were young
            her face was summer
on a morning in January he found only seabirds
     looking with purpose for something
       to devour while he looked on and she
