AN EXAMPLE OF AN OCCASION WHEN THE MULTI-MICROPHONE TECHNIQUE PROVED UNSATISFACTORY

This incident gave very concrete evidence that this technique, admirable under good acoustic conditions, has to be treated with great care when the studio conditions are not entirely suitable. Anyway, when the orchestra has been placed in its three separate sections, the microphones are put into position. They are normally suspended from booms at such a distance from their respective sections that their field of pick-up embraces the whole of that particular group of instruments, and no more.
